Founded by Steve Johnson in 1999, the business originally focused on the supply of quarried/recycled aggregates, site clearance, and disposal of contaminated materials. However, as the ‘Energy from Waste’ industry developed, they recognised the potential for Incinerator Bottom Ash, or IBA, to be carefully blended with aggregate to provide a more sustainable, lower cost, and higher quality product.

Having since developed what is widely considered as the most advanced IBA recycling facility in Europe, the company now employs more than 150 people across three sites in Nottingham, Peterborough, and their Ilkeston headquarters.

The girls on the phone are both great and so helpful, I can’t think of a time they haven’t got back to me, and things have always been sorted right away. Now FuelWorks is my first port of call in the morning, it is something I monitor every day.

Having already used Merridale fuel management systems since 2015, Johnsons recently chose to stick with them for their newly opened Peterborough site.

Toni Wood, from the transport compliance team at Johnsons said “With the initial training and help of the support team you become familiar with Merridale’s FuelWorks software very quickly and it becomes simple to use. Support was the key. The girls on the phone are both great and so helpful, I can’t think of a time they haven’t got back to me, and things have always been sorted right away. Now FuelWorks is my first port of call in the morning, it is something I monitor every day.”

Merridale FuelWorks, a market-leading web-based fuel management service, is the choice of many large fleet operators and local authorities, with over 1400 sites already in the UK. Each week more fleet operators switch to FuelWorks and take advantage of this low-cost subscription-based service, securely hosted by Merridale.

The ability of FuelWorks to be accessed through a web browser on any device gives the user complete flexibility and accessibility, eliminating the need for any software to be installed on office computers. This means that users can access the vital data they require, from anywhere, at any time. FuelWorks can also monitor tank levels and predict low stock, sending email alerts as needed.

The software has been designed in-house by Merridale to be as user-friendly as possible, without sacrificing any functionality, and allows multiple users to report on and monitor their environmental impact, fuel usage, costs, and vehicle performance across multiple sites or tanks.

When asked if Johnsons would recommend Merridale and FuelWorks to other fleet operators, Toni replied “I already have! Not just because the package does its job but mainly down to the service and support. That’s a key thing for me. Always having somebody to talk to, rather than automated message or chat systems, has helped me to get on with the job.”
